Music at Longtown Primary School
At Longtown Primary School, we believe that Music is an important part of a broad and enriching education. We aim to develop every child’s enjoyment, confidence and appreciation of music, providing opportunities to listen, perform, compose and express themselves creatively.
We follow the Kapow Primary Music scheme, which provides a progressive and engaging curriculum. Children develop their skills and knowledge through the key areas of performing, listening, composing, the history of music and the inter-related dimensions of music. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit and build upon their musical knowledge and skills as they progress through school.
Children experience a wide range of musical styles, traditions, cultures and periods, helping them to develop an appreciation of music from around the world. They learn to listen and respond to music, sing with increasing confidence, play tuned and untuned instruments, improvise and compose their own pieces, and begin to understand how music can be recorded and communicated.
Performance is an important part of our musical offer. Children have opportunities to perform individually and collaboratively, developing confidence, teamwork and a sense of achievement. Music also supports a range of wider skills, including creativity, communication, concentration, leadership and resilience.
Alongside our curriculum, we are proud to welcome Rocksteady Music School into Longtown each week. Children have the opportunity to take part in Rock Band lessons, working together in small groups to learn guitar, keyboard, drums and vocals. These sessions give pupils an exciting opportunity to experience being part of a band, develop their musical skills and build confidence through performing with others.
We also provide opportunities for children to develop their instrumental skills further through additional music tuition, including instruments such as piano, guitar, drums, flute and ukulele. Pupils also have opportunities to learn an instrument as part of their curriculum experience, broadening access to practical music-making across the school. All our young musicians have the opportunity to perform in our Christmas and Summer concerts.
Most importantly, we want children to enjoy music and recognise themselves as musicians. Whether singing, playing an instrument, composing, listening or performing as part of a band, we aim to provide memorable musical experiences that inspire children and encourage a lifelong appreciation and enjoyment of music.
