Mathematics at Longtown Primary School
At Longtown Primary School, we believe that Mathematics is an essential life skill and plays an important role in helping children understand the world around them. We want every child to enjoy Mathematics, experience success and develop the confidence to see themselves as a capable mathematician.
We follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum built around a mastery approach. Children develop secure mathematical understanding by building on previous learning in small, manageable steps, with opportunities to revisit, practise and apply important concepts.
Our curriculum develops the three key aims of the National Curriculum: fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Children learn to recall and apply key number facts efficiently, explain and justify their mathematical thinking, identify patterns and relationships, and use their knowledge to solve problems in a range of contexts.
A concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach supports children in developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Practical resources and visual representations help children make connections before progressing towards increasingly abstract methods and calculations. Mathematical vocabulary is explicitly taught so that pupils can confidently discuss, explain and reason about their learning.
We place a strong emphasis on developing secure number sense and fluency, while ensuring children experience the full breadth of Mathematics, including number, calculation, fractions, measurement, geometry, statistics, ratio and proportion and algebra, where appropriate to their age and stage.
Children are also encouraged to recognise how Mathematics connects to everyday life and the wider curriculum. Through meaningful contexts, they develop the mathematical and financial literacy that will support them throughout their education and prepare them for future life.
Our Mathematics curriculum is inclusive and ambitious for all pupils. Through adaptive teaching, appropriate challenge and timely intervention, we support children to overcome barriers while enabling those who are ready to deepen their understanding. We are also committed to the ongoing professional development of our staff, ensuring that teaching is informed by strong subject knowledge and effective mathematical practice.
Most importantly, we want children to leave Longtown as confident, resilient and independent mathematicians who are willing to challenge themselves, learn from mistakes and apply their mathematical knowledge with confidence.
