British Values at Longtown Primary School
At Longtown Primary School, we are committed to preparing our children to become responsible, respectful and active members of society. British Values are embedded throughout our school ethos and curriculum, helping children develop the knowledge, understanding and attitudes they need for life in modern Britain.
The fundamental British Values are Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are explored across the curriculum and reinforced through whole-school and class assemblies, PSHE, RE, pupil leadership opportunities and our regular discussions around Primary Picture News.
Children learn about democracy by understanding that everyone has a voice and through opportunities to contribute to decisions within school, including voting for representatives such as Pupil Voice and Eco Council members. They develop an understanding of the Rule of Law, why rules and laws are important and how they help to keep people safe.
We encourage children to understand their Individual Liberty, helping them to make informed choices, express their ideas and opinions, and understand their rights and responsibilities. Through Mutual Respect and Tolerance, children learn to value and celebrate the differences between people, including different cultures, faiths, beliefs and backgrounds.
Our curriculum encourages children to challenge discrimination and stereotypes, respect the rights and beliefs of others and understand that people may have different views from their own. We provide opportunities for children to discuss current issues, ask questions and develop their own opinions in a safe and respectful environment.
Most importantly, we want our pupils to leave Longtown Primary School as confident, compassionate and respectful young people who understand their place within their community and the wider world.
